My best friend was a Black girl, and she and I did everything together for the three years I lived there – sleepovers, family dinners, trips to the zoo, etc. I didn’t have to worry about what Grandma or anyone else thought about my friends. In hindsight, my social life suddenly became uncomplicated and unhindered. The families watched out for one another. We lived in an integrated apartment complex far away from my grandparents’ community– and it was great! There were lots of children from all backgrounds, and we all played together. When I moved in with my mother at age 7, everything changed. And when I asked my grandmother why our housekeeper was never included in family events when she was definitely part of our family, she dismissed my question with, “It’s just not done that way.” Our Black housekeeper, whom I adored, was “good enough” to watch over me when they went out of town, but not good enough to invite to dinner or a party. Grandma occasionally made negative comments about the Black family across the street or the Catholic family on the corner but only very quietly so she couldn’t be overheard. My grandmother who, although never used disparaging language in front of me, clearly felt superior to people of other races and cultures. I lived in the Midwest with my grandparents. Like most white people, in my age group, racism was an integral part of my childhood. Remember, when you eat local your money stays in your community.“A friendship based on hard work and personal truth is worth the effort.” This story is not about racism, but about overcoming racial bias. Definitely a Missoula favorite.Īpologies to any rad local, fast eatery's we might have missed. Yes, please! They showcase an array of different pizzas, antipasto, sandwiches, and salads. Location - 123 W Front Street (inside Stockmans Bar), Missoula. My suggestion is the half chicken half beef extra spicy. If you haven't given them a shot yet, you owe it to yourself. The menu is super simple with great ingredients and very filling. When you think of Stockmans Bar in Missoula you don't necessarily think of great food, but I'm here to tell you, this might be my favorite place to order. Location - (Southgate Mall) 2901 Brooks St, Missoula, MT 59801 Dobi's Teriyaki Plus it's a local, family-owned business. You might not incorporate fast food with sushi, but if you're in the Southgate mall, it's a definite go-to. Location - 319 E Front St, Missoula, MT 59802 Sushi Palace Wally is super easily located in downtown Missoula too. Their style is a bit more bougie on a bun (and they have beer). This is another killer burger joint in Missoula. Locations - 2515 Brooks St, Missoula, MT 59801 Wally & Buck They did however have a little setback with a kitchen fire recently but will be back up and running in no time. The service is fast and friendly and you can't beat the location right off Brooks. This burger joint is sort of a newcomer to the Missoula fast food scene, but it gained popularity almost overnight. With three convenient Missoula locations, it's a must for any local. If you are a carnivore craving something that will stick to your ribs, the PIG is your jam. Not to mention they make their own sauces. Louis-style dishes for many years here in the Zoo. Montana is a huge fan of good BBQ, and Notorious PIG has been serving up huge portions of St.
